Tesla models comparison: Each model side-by-side and what sets the EVs apart

0
The Tesla Model Y.
  • From least to most expensive, the Tesla models are Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X.
  • All of the models come with Autopilot, and some have features unique to the particular model.
  • This guide contains insights from test drives to help potential buyers choose a Tesla.

Elon Musk's car company Tesla is one of the most popular automakers in the world. According to estimates, more Tesla Model Ys were sold in the first quarter of 2023 than any other car on the planet.

For a potential buyer considering joining the ranks, know that Tesla has four main models available to purchase: the Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y.

All come equipped with Tesla's Autopilot feature as standard. For an extra fee, buyers can upgrade to enhanced Autopilot or Tesla's "full self-driving" capability, which has recently come under scrutiny for its misleading name and hundreds of crashes, including at least 17 deaths.

Some models come with unique features that help you tell them apart from the others. We've listed those features here, alongside a comparison of each model's price, availability, and range.

Insider's transportation reporters have test driven several Tesla models over the years. You'll find additional insights from those drives in the list below.

In order from least expensive to most expensive, these are the Tesla models you should know about:

Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3.
Price: $40,240 to $53,240, depending on model (before the federal EV tax credit)

Defining feature: The Tesla Model 3 sedan is known for its affordability. It is the entry-level Tesla made for buyers on a budget and can now be bought for less than the average new car's sticker price.

Battery range: 267 to 333 miles, depending on model

Test drive insights: One of Insider's test drivers said that driving the Tesla Model 3 was "the most fun I've had driving a car" — even if the Autopilot feature made him nervous.

Another spent a whole week with the Model 3 Long Range, using it like a real Tesla owner might: to drive to soccer games, family outings, and commuting to work.

The design details, Supercharger experience, and functionality impressed this reviewer, and he concluded that it's "the best car money can buy."

Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y.
Price: $47,490 to $54,490, depending on model (before the federal tax credit)

Defining feature: The Model Y is a compact SUV, falling somewhere between the Model 3 and Model X in Tesla's range of EVs. Those seeking space and affordability might consider the Model Y.

Battery range: 269 to 330 miles, depending on model

Test drive insights: An Insider reporter who test drove a Model Y in 2022 loved the minimalist interior, quick acceleration, and space for cargo.

Downsides of the Model Y include a bumpier-than-expected ride and somewhat limited rear visibility, according to the test driver.

Tesla Model S

The Tesla Model S.
Price: $88,490 - $108,490, depending on model (before the federal tax credit)

Defining feature: It's fast. The Tesla Model S reclaimed the lap record for a production electric vehicle at Nürburgring in June 2023.

Battery range: 348 to 405 miles, depending on model

Test drive insights: A Tesla Model S owner told Insider that "Supercharging was wonderful when I went on long-distance trips" and "other cars just can't match its acceleration." However, she still traded in her Model S for a Mercedes.

Tesla Model X

The Tesla Model X.
Price: $98,490 to $108,490, depending on model (before the federal tax credit)

Defining feature: The winged doors and SUV style make the Tesla Model X unique.

Battery range: 311 to 348 miles, depending on model

Test drive insights: One driver took the Tesla Model X on a 2018 road trip and said it was "smooth and whisper-quiet." The reviewer also said that the winged doors made for an easy entry and exit from the vehicle.

Is Tesla coming out with new models?

Several Tesla future models are in the works, including a pickup, semi-truck, a cheaper model, and a self-driving taxi.
