Gary English made a dynamite ace in the World Putting League to remind us mini golf is no joke
The World Putting League (WPL)asks a simple question of its competitors: how grand can you perform in a “mini” setting?
Monday saw the kick-off (put-off?) of the third event of the mini-golf league’s calendar in Myrtle Beach. Twelve of the world’s most patient and delicate-touch golfers graced the course with the aim of ideally winning $1,300 between two rounds.
But no one made waves like Mr. Gary English. To separate himself from the pack in a video captured by Action Network and the WPL, the man with ice in his veins sunk an ace — when you hit a shot from the tee right to the cup.
And now, the +500 consensus pre-tournament favorite looks like even more of a shoo-in for victory. Phew.

As someone who has played many rounds of mini golf in his time, I know Mr. English’s feeling. There is nothing like seeing your pink/yellow/green/blue ball make its way the length of a hole into the cup. Except, he’s doing it under more strenuous, high-pressure circumstances. Mini golf is some mere sidebar to the main course sport: it is a genuine challenge, folks.
A tip, or should I say a putt of the cap to him.
