Brabourn Grove

Brabourn Grove is a minimal house located in London, United Kingdom, designed by SAM Architects. The dwelling, with its pre-existing loft conversion, has been tastefully enlarged by integrating a full-width extension at the ground floor towards the rear. To ensure the continuity of space and light, the architects have cleverly recessed the extension, thereby crafting an additional east-facing façade. This design choice not only floods the dining area with morning sunlight but also invites the surrounding landscape into the house, enhancing the connection to the garden. The kitchen, positioned like a central pivot, is gracefully bordered by a courtyard that links the original structure with the new extension. This design aspect provides an uninterrupted visual and spatial connection, promoting a sense of continuity and cohesiveness.

To respect the scale and architecture of the adjoining properties, a thoughtfully designed curved junction bridges the height variations between the original house and its extension. The exterior walls, constructed in a soft-toned brick, are punctuated with oak-framed openings – a subtle nod to traditional craftmanship. Inside, the architects have continued the same ethos of understated elegance. The interplay of materials – oak, concrete, and curved plasterwork – brings about a sense of calmness, reinforcing the minimalistic aesthetic of the interior spaces. Reflecting the exterior’s design language, the courtyard becomes an integral part of the home’s interior, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside while fostering a sense of openness.
