About 80 per cent of recruits are joining the US military because of the example of their relatives, according to the newspaper. Former U.S. Army Chief of Staff Mike Mullen said that now “the authorities (young people) are not advising them to join the military.”
“Mothers, fathers (…) coaches and pastors don’t think it’s a good choice,” the newspaper quotes former chief of staff Mike Mullen as saying.
Currently, there are many job openings for graduates in the United States, which is another reason not to join the military. In addition, the army’s prestige has been hit by the withdrawal of the contingent from Afghanistan, causing combat veterans to ask “what was it for,” the paper said.
