Phillies Injury Updates: Thomson on Harper at first base: ‘It’s coming pretty quick’

The Latest Phillies Injury Updates

• Bryce Harper (recovering from Tommy John surgery)
• Status: Back as DH, still building up as a thrower to be able to play in the field.
• Rob Thomson loved what he saw out of Bryce Harper’s infield work with teammates in Chicago. The Phillies manager won’t put an official timeline on Harper’s return to the field, but when asked how close Harper is to being able to do everything he needs to do to play first base in a game, Thomson said, “He’s pretty close.” Dave Dombrowski hinted to reporters in Chicago that he’ll likely be the Phillies’ starting first baseman before the Aug. 1 trade deadline.
• “I think everybody has to understand too that the speed of the game is a little bit different than just taking ground balls,” Thomson said on June 30. “There are a whole bunch of situations that come up that he’s got to work through and he’s got to learn from mistakes because they’re going to happen, trust me. • Noah Song (low back strain)
• Status: MLB 60-day injured list — Began rehab assignment with Low-A Clearwater on June 28
• Noah Song struck out one batter in a scoreless 1-2-3 inning for Clearwater on June 28, his first rehab outing. He sat around 91-93 mph with his fastball and threw a slider and changeup. His next scheduled rehab outing is July 1, according to Thomson. He’ll throw one inning and stay with the Threshers until at least the All-Star Break.
• Song, a Rule 5 pick, has to spend at least 90 days on the Phillies active roster in order for the team to have the ability to option him to the minor leagues next year. A source told the Inquirer’s Scott Lauber that Song’s 90-day minimum stint on the active roster can spill over to next season. Once Song hits 90 days, he is eligible to be optioned to the minor leagues. If the Phillies bring him up to the majors and need to take him off the roster before he hits 90 days on the active roster, Song will be placed on waivers. If he clears, the Phillies are required to offer him back to the Red Sox for $50,000. (Last Updated June 30) — Destiny Lugardo

• Painter threw his second up-and-down bullpen session on June 30. He’ll throw another one and then progress to throwing to hitters in live batting practice. (Last Updated June 30) — Destiny Lugardo

• Seranthony Domínguez (left oblique strain)
• Status: 15-day injured list — Likely to return after All-Star break.
• Seranthony Domínguez played catch from 120 feet on Friday, June 30. He’ll do some flat ground work and a touch-and-feel bullpen session on July 1. Thomson thinks he’ll need a rehab outing before returning, which is likely to happen after the All-Star Break. (Last Updated June 30) — Destiny Lugardo

• Rhys Hoskins (torn ACL)
• Status: 60-day injured list — Out for 7-9 months
• The Phillies first baseman underwent successful surgery the morning of Thursday, March 30. The club officially announced that his recovery timeline is seven to nine months. Hoskins tore his ACL while trying to field a ground ball during spring training.
• Hoskins checked in with reporters on June 7. He’s off crutches and is about two weeks away from being cleared to start jogging. It’s a lofty goal, but Hoskins is aiming to return to the lineup as a designated hitter at the beginning October for a potential playoff run. (Last Updated June 8) — Destiny Lugardo
