Who was Auto Shankar?
Gowri Shankar was born on January 21, 1954, and was better known as Auto Shankar.
He was an Indian criminal, serial killer and gangster from Tamil Nadu, who was active in Chennai throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
During his life Shankar had several wives.
He married his first wife, Jagadeeswari, early in his criminal career and had four children with her.
The marriage ended when she took her own life.
Shankar killed his third wife Lalitha after she ran off with a pimp who was Shankar’s friend,
Shankar worked as a rickshaw cyclist before moving on to an auto rickshaw, which is where he got his nickname.
His criminal activity began when he started transporting illegal liquor, but he soon moved on to being in charge of prostitutes which was more profitable with lower risks.

What did Auto Shankar do?
Auto Shankar was found guilty of murdering six people Lalitha (his wife), Sudalai, Sampath, Mohan, Govindaraj and Ravi.
The bodies of the victims were either burnt or buried inside residential houses.
When he was arrested Shankar and interrogated him, he confessed to the murders during interrogation.
He also confessed to murdering three men from a rival gang.
However he escaped on August 20, 1990, but it wasn’t long until he was found.
Shankar’s trial, at the Chengalpattu sessions court, saw him sentenced to death along with two of his associates on 31 May 1991.
In 1992, Shankar’s five accomplices were sentenced to six months of rigorous imprisonment after having been found guilty by the Chengai-Anna District Judge N. Mohandoss.
Shankar’s younger brother, Auto Mohan, was also found guilty of the six murders and was awarded three life sentences.
How did Auto Shankar die?
Shankar was hanged in Salem Central Prison in 1995.
His crimes have gone down in history as one of India‘s deadliest serial killers.
