Man charged in recent burglary Avon police allege could be tied to South American theft ring

A Chilean man is facing burglary and larceny charges in connection with an Avon burglary on Sunday that police allege could be related to a South American theft ring in the area.

Avon Police Department officers responded to a residential burglar alarm on Far Hills Drive on Sunday around 1:06 p.m. As officers arrived, they said they located a broken rear sliding door. Officers entered and cleared the residence and found signs that someone had gone through the home, according to police.

The house was not occupied at the time of the incident, police said.

No suspects were located at that time, according to Avon police. A short time later, surrounding towns were alerted to an attempted burglary in Simsbury. The suspect vehicle description provided by the Simsbury Police Department reportedly matched what neighbors saw on Far Hills Drive, Avon police said.

Multiple police agencies tracked the suspects believed to be involved in a Simsbury burglary into Canton on Sunday.

The suspects were tracked to Gracey Road in Canton, in the area between Red Fox Run and Albany Turnpike, the Canton Police Department said. A vehicle believed to have been used by the suspects was found behind a home under construction, at which point a Canton officer chased after the fleeing suspects on foot.

Officers from Canton and Connecticut State Police troopers who used a K-9 team were contacted for help tracking multiple suspects, state police said.

According to Canton police, one suspect, later identified as Crispulo Lizardo Olmos-Silva, was taken into custody, while two others could not be found following an extensive search.

The Simsbury Police Department took Olmos-Silva, who was identified by his Chilean passport, into custody. Avon Police Department detectives were able to use stolen property that was reportedly found in the suspect vehicle to tie Olmos-Silva to the Far Hills Drive burglary and secured an arrest warrant.

“The burglary modus operandi was similar to what Avon experienced earlier in the year when nine homes were burglarized by a South American theft group originating out of Chile,” Avon Chief of Police Paul J. Melanson said in a statement on Friday.

Olmos-Silva was being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond and was set to be arraigned in Hartford Superior Court Friday on second-degree burglary and second-degree larceny charges.

Any with information about the incidents is asked to contact Lt. John Schmalberger at 860-409-4216.
