Levi Ponce paints a mural of faceless people, reflecting inclusivity in NoHo Arts District

From actor Danny Trejo to scientist Albert Einstein and rock legend Jimi Hendrix, muralist Levi Ponce has painted larger than life depictions of famous people on walls throughout Los Angeles County.

His latest work, “Faces of NoHo,” is different.

It’s not one person, but a colorful compilation of faceless portraits that represents regular people of different backgrounds, ages, and genders from the NoHo Arts District.

Unveiled Thursday, Aug. 10, the mural covers two walls, including the front of the Lonny Chapman Theatre building, at 10900 Burbank Blvd., North Hollywood.

Los Angeles City Council President Paul Krekorian, who attended the unveiling, said the artwork was paid for using excess bond funds from the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency.

“I didn’t go there and paint one person. This is about people coming together. That’s why there’s no facial features because it is all of us,” said Ponce on Friday, Aug. 11.

Ponce, who lives in North Hollywood, has worked in film, doing visual effects for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and designed attractions for Disneyland and Disney World.

The North Hollywood artist is known for his murals of Hendrix on Lankershim Boulevard and the artwork “Vintage Noho” located just off the 170 Freeway at Sherman Way.
