I’m a DIY pro – don’t convert your shed into a tiny home, you’ll get mold and you can build a cabin for the same price
A HOME renovation expert has revealed why people should think twice before converting a shed into a tiny home.
He said the transformation not only poses a risk for mold but building a DIY cabin costs about the same.
Derrick (@delta_whiskey89) filmed himself discussing the matter in a video on TikTok.
“Let’s talk about something really important. And that’s the tough sheds to tiny house conversions. I don’t like them.
“I’m going to tell you why. Now. This is an eight-foot-by-10-foot shed that we built in the backyard. This is an actual construction-grade home. This is a cabin house. Quality build,” he started off.
He compared the cabin built from the ground up to an average Home Depot shed.
“You do not get that from a Home Depot shed. It’s set up so that we can vent the soffits. You’re not gonna get that from a shed.
“Once again, so you can’t vent your roof space. Vaulted ceiling. You’re gonna end up with mold issues,” he added.
He advised that he bought some parts of the cabin on a budget from Facebook Marketplace.
“Same price. You can do so much better. If you build an actual quality cabin. Then you can do buying one of these tough sheds.
“Do yourself a favor. Do a little bit of research on YouTube. Build yourself something.
“This was the first thing we ever built together, Veronica and I, and it turned out fantastic.
“Same price, and, I mean, it’s so much more cute than a tough shed, right?” he said.
The video drew in many viewers who shared their thoughts in the comment section.
“But you did the labor yourself?” one asked.
“Yes we did. And this little cabin will last 100 years plus, just like a traditionally framed home. Little labor for a superior product,” he replied.
