Row is raging after Sadiq Khan’s office tried to ‘silence’ scientists over ULEZ pollution impact

A ROW is raging after London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s office tried to “silence” scientists over his ultra-low emission zone having little pollution impact.

Private correspondence between his environment deputy Shirley Rodrigues and Prof Frank Kelly revealed she was “really disappointed” over research findings.

Ulez, which costs drivers £12.50 a day if their vehicle does not meet emissions standards, will be extended to cover all of London next week.

But an Imperial College study found its initial introduction in 2019 cut nitrogen oxide by less than three per cent.

However, Prof Kelly agreed to issue a statement, helped by Ms Rodrigues, saying Ulez had helped “dramatically to reduce air pollution”.

Colleagues told the Sunday Telegraph they stand by their work “100 per cent”.

But critics warned of an “alarmingly cosy relationship” between Mr Khan’s office and the scientists.

Peter Fortune, a Tory member of the Greater London Assembly, called it “unacceptable”.

Mr Khan’s spokesman said it was “normal and proper” to work with experts to ensure policies are effective as possible.
