In Lajpore Central Jail in Surat, Gujarat, a team of 107 prisoners are polishing 25,000 rough-cut gemstones into diamonds every month. This prison is known for polishing 95% of the world's showroom stock of diamonds. The prisoners earn up to Rs 20,000 a month depending on their skills. The jail provides employment opportunities for the majority of its 3,000 inmates, including furniture making and sculpting.
