Dogs are man's best friend but often we don't deserve them, says Patrick O'Flynn

The phrase "man's best friend" is almost universally understood in this country: whoever utters it will be talking about dogs. And in terms of the loyalty and trust given by pet to the owner, there can be no disputing it.
