BBC Breakfast viewers open-mouthed as reporter wrestles in GRAVY before being ‘knocked out’ in baffling scenes
BBC BREAKFAST viewers were left open-mouthed as a reporter wrestled in gravy … yep you read that correctly!
Longtime presenters Jon Kay, 53, and Sally Nugent, 52, took to the airwaves to host today’s edition of the morning show.
Fresh from their bank holiday rest, the presenters couldn’t help but reflect on what they imagine as picturesque summer scenes on BBC Breakfast.
However, the duo from the publicly funded corporation certainly got more than they bargained for as they were asked to report on a special event.
“The August Bank Holiday often conjures up images, doesn’t it, have like, I don’t know, lovely village fates, Garden Parties, family fun days,” Sally explained.
“But that’s not quite what you get in the village of Stacksteads in Lincolnshire,” before correcting herself to state that the location is actually in Lancashire.
Jon then interjected: “For the last 15 years, look at this.
“It has been the venue for the World Gravy Wrestling Championships, which is basically what it says on the can of gravy granules.”
As the aerial shots of the event were then shown on screen, Jon revealed how one important member of the BBC team actually entered himself into the competition.
“And that is the BBC Radio Lancashire presenter Graham Liver, taking part in the event, under his nickname the The Penwortham Porker, fighting the contestant Elvis in a swimming pool full of gravy,” claimed Jon.
Sally laughed: “Graham was knocked out I’m not surprised to learn.”
“But in fact, more than 20 men and women took part in this competition,” she continued.
“It is held annually to raise money for a local hospice,” as the presenter then pondered, “And you basically just kind of fight, in a vat of gravy?”
To which Jon joked that the process was “cheaper than a spray tan,” as Sally pondered how “smelly,” it would be.
Even weather presenter Carol Kirkwood, 61, couldn’t help but get involved in the conversation.
As Jon got ready to introduce his co-star to give the weekly forecast he asked if she fancied a bout in the charity competition.
She joked that she would only take part if there was a “huge Yorkshire Pudding in there.”
At the end of her scheduled slot, Jon declared how he’d even gone and booked a slot for him and Carol to battle it out at 3pm the following day!
Viewers could not contain their excitement at the strange programme item as they took to X, formerly known as Twitter.
One commented: “Gravy wrestling #bbcbreakfast,” as a second replied to that tweet with a GIF of Judge Judy rolling her eyes.
Another noted: “@BBCBreakfast what’s a waste of gravy. Just ask for a donation. People struggling to buy food and food is being wasted.”
“Gravy wrestling, When it’s hot I bet it’s roasting in that pool Sorry,” joked a fourth.
To which a fifth viewer replied: “Jesus imagine the smell .”
