I test drove an EV which everyone LOVES… but it’s got dodgy brakes, weak suspension & is a nightmare to drive

A CAR expert who test drove an EV which everyone loves says it’s got dodgy breaks, weak suspension and is a nightmare to drive.

The ID.5 is Volkswagen‘s first all-electric SUV Coupe and a more compact alternative to the brand’s ID.4.

It is available in three rear-wheel drive (RWD) ‘Pro’ configurations: Style at £50,625, Tech at £54,020, and Max at £57,635.

These all have an 81 kWh (or 77 kWh net) battery pack, 128 kW (172 hp) of power and 235 Nm of torque.

There’s also the ‘Pro Performance’ line and GTX 4MOTION Style.

Alex Robbins test-drove the newest EV offering from the beloved German manufacturer.

He praised the size of the vehicle saying it has plenty of room and a “huge” boot.

However, the reviewer criticised the ID.5’s degree of smoothness and steadiness and claimed there were “more comfortable EVs out there” which cost less.

“The brake pedal does a decent job of combining friction and regenerative braking, meanwhile, until you reach a near-stop, at which point the brakes can get quite snatchy,” Alex wrote in the Telegraph.

He continued: “The ride, too, feels acceptable at first but the further you drive the more it starts to niggle.

“In the median part of its travel, so around town, the suspension feels more dim-witted; it isn’t sharp-edged, but it just doesn’t respond quickly enough.

“That means all the little imperfections in the road surface are passed through to the interior as though the shock absorbers are made of pine.”

When it comes to competition, there are numerous all-electric SUVs to consider: Hyundai Ioniq 5 77kWh Ultimate, Skoda Enyaq iV 80 Coupe EcoSuite Plus and Tesla Model Y Long Range.

It comes as a motorist has taken to TikTok to complain about the Tesla Model Y, the bestselling EV put out by billionaire Elon Musk‘s company.

The Tiktoker named Tom, posting on his channel The Fast Charge, spoke out about the EV in a 49-second clip which has gone viral.

He opened by saying: “Here’s some things I like and dislike about the Tesla Model Y, one of the most popular EVs in the UK at the moment.”
