I was in Hollyoaks but quit to become a journalist – a decade later people STILL ask for selfies with me
AN EX-HOLLYOAKS star has revealed what her life has really been like since she quit the show to become a journalist.
From people shouting her name in the street to being given career advice, the actress said she’s surprised by the interactions she has 10 years after leaving the show.
Cassie Powney played Mel Burton on the show alongside her twin sister Sophie Burton until her character died in 2006 because of the dog in the pond pub explosion.
Cassie says people randomly shout HOLLYOAKS in her face when she is out in public.
She told Cosmopolition: “I’ve come to the conclusion it’s just a nervous thing, but still haven’t worked out the best way to respond. If I knew what their job was perhaps I could just shout that back… NATWEST! BURGER KING!”
The writer says a lot of people don’t understand how the TV industry actually works.
She explained when an acting job finished the TV company does not keep paying your mortgage.
A lot of people are surprised after learning what the actress now does for a living.
Since many people struggle to understand the industry Cassie revealed she is often given a lot of unsolicited career advice.
She said people tell her to try and get on another soap like Eastenders or even go back to Hollyoaks.
Of course if Cassie did come back from the dead she’d have to adapt to the new world of streaming online as bosses at Channel four have recently announced Hollyoaks will no longer be streaming on its main channel.
But it’s not just the public who keep recognising her, it’s the rich and famous too.

In her role as a journo for Cosmopolitan Cassie has had to interview many celebrities with much higher profiles than herself but sometimes she leaves them star struck.
She said Lily Allen stopped her in one interview while Little Mix were super excited when they learnt who she was.
Cassie says one thing she can’t get past is how differently she looks at other soap actors.
She says while viewers may be engrossed in another actor’s emotional scene she is remembering all their drunken antics at the Soap Awards.
Likewise Cassie knows all the hidden secrets behind the TV so when we see an actor balling up on screen it’s probably because a makeup artist has been holding vapour rub under their eyes.
Unfortunately Cassie played an alcoholic who had a very tragic death, so a lot of people come to her with questions and comments on her character.
She said people make jokes about her drinking when she’s at bars and are usually desperate to know whether she asked that her character be killed off.
Cassie says: “Ermmm, I can’t remember really, a bit of both, I think… yeah, you know. I was ready to go. Bit of both…”
