Journalist is ‘surprised’ that one player didn’t try to force a Tottenham exit
The Sun’s Tom Barclay has admitted that he is surprised Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg did not try to force himself out of Tottenham during the summer transfer window.
Over the course of the summer transfer window, there was a lot of speculation linking Hojbjerg with a move away from Spurs.
Even on transfer deadline day, it was suggested that the Lilywhites were looking to offload the Dane and replace him with Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher (Guardian).
However, in the end, the 28-year-old stayed put at Spurs, with Atletico Madrid’s proposal reportedly falling short of the North London club’s valuation (Fabrizio Romano) while the player allegedly turned down the chance to join the Cottagers (Evening Standard).
Speaking to Danish outlet Bold a couple of days ago, the midfielder revealed that he has had a ‘good dialogue’ with Ange Postecoglou regarding his role this season, adding that he is prepared to give his best whenever opportunities come his way.
Hojbjerg was expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur
However, Barclay revealed that he expected the former Southampton man to force his way out of the club rather than settle for a bit-part role.
When asked about Hojbjerg, Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris remaining at Tottenham, the journalist said on The Tottenham Way Podcast: “I am surprised. I can understand they’re useful players in the squad.
“Hojbjerg in particular, his professionalism is well-known around the Spurs squad and he’s better than people give him credit for. But yeah, I am just surprised that they didn’t force a move because they didn’t want to be coming off the bench.”

Unlike both Dier and Lloris, who have no part to play under Postecoglou, the Australian evidently counts on Hojbjerg, even though he does not see the Dane as an automatic starter for now.
So, perhaps, the 28-year-old felt that he still had a chance of winning over the new head coach and forcing himself into the starting eleven.
