Over 2,000 casualties in Morocco’s 6.8 magnitude earthquake
According to a Moroccan state media outlet, the number of casualties from the powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake that shook Morocco on Friday night has exceeded 2,000 people.
Moroccan government media, citing the Ministry of Interior of the country, reported on Sunday, in the latest update on the increase in the death toll from this earthquake.
According to officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country, as a result of this earthquake, 2,015 people have been killed so far.
However, the ministry has reported the number of injuries in this incident as 2,059 and stated that 1,400 have been classified as severe.
Based on casualty figures reported from this natural disaster, this earthquake is considered the deadliest earthquake to have occurred in this country in recent decades.
According to reports, rescue teams are working to reach the affected areas, and roads are blocked by debris.
According to the United States Geological Survey, this powerful earthquake was the strongest earthquake to shake the surrounding areas of Morocco in over 120 years.
The United States Geological Survey located the earthquake’s epicentre 72 kilometres southwest of the historical city of Marrakech and recorded its magnitude as 6.8 on the Richter scale.
The earthquake’s epicentre is in a remote mountainous region, and residents have told reporters that many buildings have been destroyed or damaged.
