Xi Jinping Opens biggest-ever Asian Games in China
Chinese President Xi Jinping officially inaugurated the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, Eastern China, following a vibrant ceremony on Saturday. Organizers aim to boost national spirits amid ongoing economic challenges.
China hosts the Asian Games with hundreds of athletes from diverse nations, including 82 representatives from Afghanistan.
According to reports, the opening ceremony of these games took place on Saturday in an 80,000-seat stadium in China.
The 19th edition of these games will feature competitions in 40 sports, spanning 61 disciplines and comprising 482 sporting events.
82 athletes in 15 sports disciplines also represent Afghanistan in a delegation of 128 individuals, including 46 coaches and 17 female athletes.
Meanwhile, the opening ceremony of these games, Xi Jinping, the President of China, and other dignitaries were present.
President Xi Jinping referred to these games as a symbol of the common desire of the people of Asia for peace, unity, and inclusivity. He emphasized that “as humanity faces unprecedented global challenges, we must use sports to strengthen unity.”
According to reports, this edition of the games will continue with competitions in 40 sports until October 8th.
In these games, 12,500 athletes from various countries will participate in different sports disciplines.
China’s sporting and business hub reputation suffered significantly during the pandemic. Stringent lockdowns and travel restrictions led to the cancellation of nearly all international events in the country.
