High school football roundup: Riordan, Moreau among Saturday’s winners
No. 7 Riordan 41, No. 12 St. Ignatius 34
Archbishop Riordan freshman running back Isi Tuugamusu bowled over San Francisco rival St. Ignatius on Saturday in a five-touchdown day that saw multiple lead changes.
St. Ignatius junior Odhran Kenny started the scoring with a 45-yard field goal, and Riordan’s Tuugamusu answered with a two-yard touchdown run with 3:22 left in the first quarter to give the home team to lead.
St. Ignatius responded as Jarious Hogan scored two touchdowns before the end of the opening quarter, one rushing and one receiving. The first quarter ended with St. Ignatius leading 17-7.
Riordan rallied in the second quarter as the Mike Mitchell Jr.-led passing attack carved up the SI defense on long scoring drives. Tuugamusu’s three- and one-yard touchdown runs gave Riordan a 21-17 at halftime.
St. Ignatius forced a turnover on outside linebacker Daniel Leupold’s strip-sack after halftime, and then Hogan powered in from one yard out for his third TD of the day with 7:50 left in the third quarter to give the visitors a 24-21 advantage.
Riordan retook the lead, 28-24, with 4:06 left in the third with a fourth Tuugamusu touchdown on a one-yard score and then another field goal by Kenny cut the Crusaders’ lead to 28-27.
Riordan pulled away in the fourth quarter.
Tuugamusu rushed for his fifth touchdown of the game with 11:49 to go, and then Mitchell threw a 23-yard pass to Chris Lawson to make it 41-27.
SI quarterback Brandon Mann, a sophomore, threw a 38-yard touchdown to Quinn Folk to cut the deficit to 41-34 with three minutes left. But the onside kick was unsuccessful, and the Crusaders ran out the clock.
Riordan (3-1) will play host to Valley Christian next Saturday and St. Ignatius (2-2) will be at home to face Bellarmine on Friday.

Moreau Catholic 23, Salesian 21
In a non-league game that went down to the wire, Jadon Redd clinched the victory for Moreau when he made a tackle to stop a two-point conversion that would have given host Salesian the lead. “It was a great game played by both teams,” Moreau coach Keith Minor said in a text. The victory avenged Moreau’s 14-10 playoff loss to Salesian last season. In this one, Peyton Collins ran for two touchdowns and returned an interception 90 yards to set up Jeremiah Charles’ quarterback sneak for a TD. Miles Moore, Lance Mitchell and Andrew Placido led a front seven for Moreau that played well. Seth Evans intercepted a pass, and Julio Ramos kicked a 30-yard field goal that turned out to be the decisive points. Moreau (2-3) has next week off, then plays host to Castro Valley in a West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division opener on Oct. 6. Salesian (3-1) visits St. Patrick-St. Vincent on Friday. – Darren Sabedra
Vallejo 29, Bethel 12
Vallejo quarterback Jasier Smith helped the team rally from a 12-7 halftime deficit by throwing a 35-yard touchdown pass to Sedrick Vaughn early in the third quarter. Kevin Pettis added a 15-yard touchdown run, and Vaughn capped the scoring with a 35-yard run. Vallejo (3-2) will play host to Acalanes on Friday. Bethel will be at home to meet El Cerrito on Oct. 7. — Joseph Dycus
Galileo-San Francisco 20, Ygnacio Valley 8
Ygnacio Valley’s 28-game losing streak has featured some tough losses, but few have been as frustrating as Saturday’s loss at Galileo-San Francisco. Wolves coach Rae Jackson said the team had five trips inside the 10-yard line, and could only score once. Sophomore running back Romel Mariano scored on a three-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Ygnacio Valley (0-4) plays at Pinole Valley on Friday. – Joseph Dycus
Piedmont 36, Arroyo 8
Playing its fifth road game of the season, Piedmont’s great season continued as the Highlanders improved to 3-2. Junior quarterback Markos Lagios ran for a 96-yard touchdown and also threw for another. Running back Tommy Ashton and junior Sam Shelby each rushed for a touchdown. Junior tight end Cash Elmquist caught a touchdown. Piedmont plays at Alameda on Oct. 7 after a bye week, and Arroyo (1-4) plays at Kennedy-Fremont on Friday. – Joseph Dycus
