Do-gooding influencer waltzes into Sainsbury’s to try and pay for people’s shopping & ends up in tears when it backfires
AN influencer has been slammed for attempting to pay for people’s shopping while filming it for her TikTok account.
Milly G, who lives in London, decided to film herself going to Sainsbury’s offer to buy people’s food shop as a ‘nice‘ gesture – but it didn’t go quite to plan.
In the clip, the influencer said: “This is the result of me wants to do something very nice and buy someone’s food shop.
“I just felt super deflated, and this is the video showing it all.”
The Gymshark athlete thought it would make a wholesome video for her social media, but it turned out not a single person wanted her to buy their shopping.
Milly added: “It’s Wednesday, i just wanna cheer someone up.
“Midweek slump.”
She then made her way to the checkout at her local Sainsbury’s store and decided she was going to pay for one man’s shopping while he placed his items on the conveyor belt.
Milly decided to chose a shop that was located in Balham, London, known for it’s high house prices and high cost of living.
People were quick to point out that Sainsbury’s and West London weren’t the best places to go to offer to pay for someone’s shopping.
Milly went up to the older gentleman and without introducing herself said: “Excuse me. This may be really random, but I’d love to pay for your food shop today.
“Just because I want to.”
Taken aback by her offer, he quickly replied: “Why?”
Milly explained she wanted to do something nice, but he refused and apparently looked very angry according to Milly.
Embarrassed, Milly walked away from the situation saying she felt judged.
She then found her next targert, but the woman quickly shut it down saying ‘There’s a lot more deserving people in the world, but thank you.’
Giving up on her plan, Milly decided to go around the store and pick up some sauces, rice and pasta to put in the food bank trolley.
But she still wasn’t over nobody accepting her gracious offer.
“That was really stressful. I felt really, like, in panic mode.
“I don’t know why.
“I just felt like I was expecting someone to be.
“And I was expecting the first person to be, like, you know, overjoyed and grateful and happy for me to pay for their shopping.
“But obviously that didn’t go down well.”
The influencer then began crying, stating she was emotionally overwhelmed but was glad she got some food for the food bank.
“In hindsight I can see why people can react differently to this, but my intentions were purely to brighten up someone’s day, I’m still super happy with what I ended up doing and I’ll do more of it for sure,” she captioned the post.
The clip posted to her TikTok account @millyg_fit has since gone viral with over 2million views and over 100k likes.
People in the comments were quick to slam the influencer, wondering if her ‘kind’ gesture was really genuine if she was filming it for social media.
One person wrote: “This is so deeply out of touch I’m dying hahahaha.”
Another commented: “So you’re upset because they didn’t want to accept your offer, just to make yourself feel better? Could probs tell it wasn’t a genuine selfless offer.”
“Never understood the need for people to post on social media when they do something like this – are you doing it out of genuine kindness or attention?” penned a third.
Meanwhile a fourth said: “In the nicest possible sense, it’s a more helpful act to donate to the food bank. It’s ok that you didn’t get the thanks it means more.”
“Lovely gesture, but remember you don’t need to film a good deed to be valid, you remember it from your heart, very close line,” claimed a fifth.
“why would anyone shopping at Sainsbury’s need the help?” questioned one viewer.
Others had more sympathy for Milly and praised her actions despite them not totally working out.
someone else added: “Honestly so proud of you for doing that and sharing this. The lesson here is others behaviour or response is never a reflection of your goodwill+worth.”
“I can tell how difficult you found that. It’s almost like rejection, which isn’t nice for anybody. Good on you for donating to the food bank amazing,” responded one viewer.
