A 35-year-old man died Saturday as he attempted to cross a road in Deerfield Beach in his wheelchair and a driver crashed into him, knocking him off the chair and into the road, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Brandon Griffin, of Pompano Beach, was crossing from east to west in the 3700 block of Northeast Third Avenue about 8:30 p.m. while a 24-year-old Boynton Beach man driving a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta was heading south on the road in the left lane. The driver’s front bumper crashed into the right side of Griffin’s wheelchair, ejecting him, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The driver stayed at the crash scene and cooperated with deputies. North Lauderdale Fire Rescue took Griffin to Broward Health North, where he was pronounced dead, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigators do not believe the driver was impaired, speeding or that the car had a mechanical malfunction. Their investigation continues.
