Golden Globes eliminate 2 TV categories, add 2 new categories for box office and stand-up performance
The Golden Globe Awards are making changes once again, announcing two new categories for the upcoming 2024 ceremony – Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and TV Stand-Up Comedy Performance. To make room, they have eliminated the two TV supporting acting races that separated limited/movie and comedy/drama. There will now be just two television categories for Best TV Supporting Actor and Best TV Supporting Actress once again.
According to the newly revised rules and eligibility page created by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement will honor the year’s most financially successful and most viewed films that received at least a total box office gross of $150 million ($100 million coming from the domestic U.S. box office), or has achieved high viewership numbers on streaming services, such as Netflix, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Paramount+ or Disney+, recognized from industry sources. This includes all movies that qualify for all the top film categories at the Golden Globes, including Best Film Drama, Best Film Comedy/Musical, Best Animated Film and Best Non-English Language Film. A total of eight nominees will be selected for the new movie category.
Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television will recognize comedy performances on programs of at least 30 consecutive minutes on broadcast, streaming and cable for the eligible year in the United States. Apart from stand-up comedy specials, this will additionally include variety shows, special live events and productions of stage plays, operas and concerts. Performers in this category will not be eligible for any of the other television categories which include Drama, Comedy and Limited/Movie.
As far as potential nominees for the new additions, films like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” that are big contenders in the other categories, will no doubt be a part of the conversation for the box office award. The former is currently at the top, grossing over $1.4 billion thus far. Other contenders might include “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”
For the stand-up award, comedians John Mulaney, Chris Rock and Wanda Sykes are among people who have released popular Emmy-nominated specials this year. Variety hosts eligible could include John Oliver, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert.
