Here’s why you should never invest in a pair of posh designer earrings – and why cheap Amazon dupes are actually better
A SAVVY fashion fan has explained why investing in posh designer ‘gold’ earrings may actually be a waste of money – and why the price doesn’t always reflect the quality.
When it comes to forking out for designer gear and accessories, many tend to assume it automatically means better quality – but as one woman, Allie, recently proved, that is not always the case.
Taking to TikTok, the fashion whizz revealed the difference between the viral Bottega Drop Earrings and dupes sold by Amazon – and the price tag is not the only element to differ.
According to the whizz, there are four types of gold jewellery – Gold Plated (the lowest quality and price), Gold Vermeil (affordable and slightly higher quality), Gold Filled (more expensive but tarnish resistant), and Solid Gold (14k or 18k; most expensive and best quality).
What you can see at the top whilst shopping for the look-alike on Amazon is that the earrings are gold plated, as well as anti-allergy, she pointed out in the video.
A similar style product by Anthropologie, meanwhile, sells for almost £30 more, despite also being gold plated just like the £8 version on Amazon.
”Here’s where it gets good,” went on Allie before spilling the tea – and it’s hot.
Sharing a snap of the on-trend Bottega earrings, which cost an eye-watering £860, Allie explained they were 18k gold finish.
Whilst for some this may mean absolutely nothing, the savvy shopper revealed that this ”means it’s actually even less gold than a gold plated jewellery piece”.
”So here you are, paying £1,107 ($1,350) for almost no gold, really poor quality, will tarnish.
”I don’t think it would ever be worth £1,107 ($1,350).”
She went on: ”This is why it’s so important to understand the difference between fine jewellery and designer jewellery that’s just costume wear.”

Fellow bargain hunters raced to comments, where one said: ”1350?? You can 18k pure gold earings and a ring for that price [sic].”
A second chimed in: ”Gold filled is 100 per cent the way to go on Etsy there are so many good sellers for so cheap & never tarnish.”
”It’s honestly insane how many major luxury brands put out plated jewelry at those prices [sic],” a third penned.
”I tell my friends not to even buy designer jewellery ALL THE TIME. You can get solid 14k, 18k, hell even 24k gold vintage for way less,” a fashionista commented.
