At least 7 dead & 8 missing in horror nightclub fire in Spain as inferno rips through packed birthday party
AT least six have been killed after a fire broke out in a busy nightclub in Spain this morning.
Firefighters are still searching for more victims in the smouldering ruins of the venue in the south-eastern city of Murcia.
The inferno broke out in the early hours of this morning and ripped through the venue that is said to have consisted of three different clubs – Golden, Teatre and Fonda.
Another four people have been injured after suffering smoke inhalation.
“Emergency services confirm six dead in the interior of the Teatre nightclub,” Mayor Jose Ballesta wrote on X/Twitter, adding that they were working to establish the cause of the blaze.
Emergency services said the number of fatalities could rise.
There are reports that firefighters are looking for eight people reported as missing who are thought to have been in the nightclub at the time.
The missing people allegedly belonged to the same group that were celebrating a birthday party in Fonda nightclub, La Verdad reports.
Forty firefighters were involved in the effort to contain the blaze and they are still trying to access the section in which the fire started.
The Emergency Coordination Centre said: “At this moment in time, several teams of Murcia firefighters are at the scene trying to put out the fire.
“The firefighters have requested the intervention of an emergency response helicopter.
“Several ambulances are also at the scene to assist the four injured people we are aware of so far.
“All have suffered smoke inhalation and two have been taken to hospital. The number of dead stands at four.
“The local police has cordoned off the area.”
National Police spokesman Diego Seral said: “It’s too early for us to say how the fire started. That is still under investigation.”
He said the fire broke out on the first floor of the nightclub.
Early reports said the people who lost their lives could be nightclub workers but Mr Seral said: “It’s too early for us to say whether this is the case.”
The Homicide Group of the Murcia Police have joined the investigation into the cause of the fire.
