AN INSURANCE expert has said that you could be slapped with a £5,000 fine for a cheeky activity while driving in the rain.

What might seem like a harmless joke can end up costing you thousands of pounds in fines.

In a video shared on TikTok, Rooster Car Insurance revealed several driving offences and the fines for each.

The presenter said: “If you purposely drive over a puddle to splash a pedestrian you could be fined up to £5,000.”

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is illegal to drive “without reasonable consideration for other persons”.

The law also bans “driving through a puddle causing pedestrians to be splashed”.

Fines are imposed if a driver’s behaviour is found to be “an act of incompetence, selfishness, impatience, or aggressiveness”.

On top of monetary fines, drivers risk three and nine penalty points on their licence.

You could also be slapped with a fine for driving with pets.

The expert explained: “If you’re driving with an unsecured pet in your car then it could be construed as distracted driving.

“This is usually a £100 fine and three points on your licence, but the court could increase it to £5,000 with nine points added to your licence.”

Drivers could be hit with another hefty fine if they are found to be the cause of an accident and weren’t wearing the specs they need to see clearly.

Under the Emergency Works (Obstruction) Act 2006, you can also be fined up to £5,000 for “wilfully impeding” an emergency vehicle.

Finally many drivers don’t know that it is also an offence to flash your headlights.
