David Walliams ‘locked in Italian prison for seven hours’ after trip to Venice goes wrong

DAVID Walliams got more than he bargained for on a trip to Italy when he ended up in jail for seven hours.

The comedian and writer went to Venice for a weekend away, but a huge blunder saw him locked up by authorities.

David revealed during a Q&A that he held on to an old passport after it expired.

The Little Britain star accidentally travelled with that ID to Italy instead of the correct passport.

While this was not picked up on at Heathrow, Italian police were less forgiving and once the author arrived in Venice he found himself put away in the slammer.

He has since joked: “Luckily, my laptop was fully charged. I had my little carry-on luggage, and I sat there, and I typed for seven hours straight, and the time passed very well.

“So the best place to write, for me, is an Italian prison cell.”

This is not the only time David has unintentionally found himself in trouble, as he also had to resign from Britain’s Got Talent when some offscreen comments he made about contestants got leaked.

According to a transcript of the recording which was made public, he called one OAP a “c***” three times and said of another: “She thinks you want to f*** her, but you don’t.”

In a statement issued before he quit, he said: “I would like to apologise to the people I made disrespectful comments about during breaks in filming for Britain’s Got Talent in 2020.

“These were private conversations and – like most conversations with friends – were never intended to be shared. Nevertheless, I am sorry.”
