UNHCR and IOM Urge Pakistan to halt Afghan migrants’ expulsion

0

Following the expulsion of Afghan migrants from Pakistan, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other global migration groups have urged Pakistan to keep helping migrants who could be in danger.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issued a joint statement with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Saturday, urging all countries to halt the forced deportation of Afghan refugees.

The statement from UNHCR and IOM highlights that Afghanistan faces numerous human rights challenges, especially for women and girls. Such a decision is expected to have adverse consequences for those forced to leave their country.

According to these migration organizations, returnees face serious security threats, and they have requested Pakistan to facilitate the conditions for the voluntary return of Afghans without any pressure and in a dignified manner.

The United Nations emphasizes the need for cooperation with Pakistan to establish a comprehensive and sustainable mechanism for registering Afghan nationals, emphasizing that the forced return of these migrants could lead to serious human rights violations.

Global reactions to the expulsion of 1.7 million Afghan migrants from Pakistan have increased.

Previously, human rights organizations in Pakistan and Afghanistan had also called for cancelling Pakistan’s decision to expel Afghan migrants from its country.
