A gardener who impaled himself on a rusty metal fence pole that entered his body inches from his anus and went through his torso lives to tell the tale.

Frank Vaorin, 55, was pruning trees at his home in Cuxhaven, Germany, when he slipped off a ladder and landed on the three-inch thick pole.

Gruesome hospital scans show how the massive pole ended up emerging through his rib cage.

Frank is now making a full recovery in hospital because the pole avoided touching a single vital organ.

Frank said: I remember hanging there on the pole with my feet in the air.

‘My son quickly pushed something under my feet to stop the bar from slipping any further.’

He added that he was ‘conscious the whole time’ and said: ‘I would like to thank the doctors and rescue workers for saving my life and my son for how quickly he helped and called for help.

‘I’m just glad I’m still alive.’

Doctors at the Bremen-Mitte Clinic speak of many guardian angels / metal pierced lengthways through the body, but did not injure any organs, Frank Vaorin was incredibly lucky in misfortune. The 55-year-old father from Cuxhaven fell from the ladder while pruning trees in his garden, fell four meters into the depths and was practically impaled lengthwise by a rusty, more than one meter long fence pole. The rod pierced through his abdomen next to his anus, past his right colon, past vital vessels and liver, through his diaphragm and into his chest. It also spared the lungs, pierced some ribs and emerged below the collarbone. ?The patient didn?t just have one guardian angel, there must have been many,? says Prof. H?seyin Bektas, head of general and visceral surgery at the Bremen-Mitte Clinic. His clinical team operated on Frank Vaorin together with the thoracic surgeons and removed the rod from his body. ?The fact that the rod didn?t injure a single organ is practically a miracle. I have never experienced a case like this in my entire career,? says Bektas. If the man from Cuxhaven had hit the pole in just a slightly different way, the injuries would have been much worse and the accident could even have been fatal. The patient and the rod were taken by rescue helicopter to the emergency room at the Bremen-Mitte Clinic. The fire department had previously had to laboriously cut him free from the fence on his property. ?I was conscious the whole time,? recalls Frank Vaorin. His son Tom (21) saw the accident in the garden and immediately alerted the rescue services. ?I remember hanging there on the pole with my feet in the air. My son quickly pushed something under my feet to stop the bar from slipping any further.? Chief physician Bektas says: ?It is proof that you should never give up hope, even if the chance of rescue seems so small.? For Bektas, the case is so unique that he would like to describe it in international journals. Frank Vaorin will now have to stay in hospital for observation for the next few days. The large wounds have to heal and he is also given antibiotics to combat possible inflammation. He also has to mentally process the accident first, just like his son, who had to witness everything. ?I would like to thank the doctors and rescue workers for saving my life and my son for how quickly he helped himself and called for help. I?m just glad I?m still alive.?

Head surgeon Professor Hueseyin Bektas said: ‘The patient didn’t just have one guardian angel, there must have been many.’

Firefighters sawed off the pole and Frank was then transferred over to the care of paramedics.

Gesundheit Nord hospital, where Frank is being treated, said in a statement: ‘Frank Vaorin was incredibly lucky in his misfortune.
