UK weather- Brits to be battered by showers TODAY with warnings for rain and flooding chaos
BRITS have been issued with a yellow weather today warning as the UK is set to be battered with heavy showers.
The Met Office has urged large parts of the UK to prepare for stormy conditions, strong winds and travel chaos.
A yellow weather warning for rain has been put in place covering the south of England.
Moving up the country, Birmingham and Manchester are also affected by the alert.
The notice was in force from 9pm last night and ends at 8pm tonight.
Storms in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall have already wreaked havoc as more than 700 homes are currently without power.
The Environment Agency issued a flood warning for areas along the Gog Brook, in Warwick today, and 10 other flood alerts across the country.
It read: “Flooding is expected in this area. This means properties are at risk of flooding.
“Please take action to protect yourself and your property and monitor local weather and river conditions.
“Avoid contact with, walking or driving through flood water. Consider activating any property flood protection products you may have.
“A flood warning means you need to act – flooding is expected.”
The EA have urged Brits affected to move their cars to higher locations and place valuable items inside properties upstairs.
Those at risk of flooding have also been advised to use protection methods, such as sandbags outside their homes.
If your home is flooded, the EA suggests warns you should turn of your gas, electricity and water mains supplies.
Met Office meteorologists have warned Brits can expect: “Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer.
“Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely.
“Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer.”
Ellie Glaisyer, Met Office Meteorologist said: “We’ve got a yellow weather warning in place for rain, with some localised flooding possible giving way to some travel disruption through the morning rush hour.
“We could also see a risk of thunder particularly across the south east of the UK as we head through Friday afternoon.
“The rain we can see across much of the southern central parts of the UK will slowly sink its way south eastwards as we move through the day.
“Some strong winds particularly along the south coast, with some isolated gusts of up to 50 or 60mph.”
Those further north are expected to experience a “drier” day with “plenty of sunny spells” until the afternoon.
Meanwhile temperatures will reach highs of 21C in London and the south east coast.
Further north, figures are set to remain in the mid to late teens, while Scotland and Northern Ireland hover at around 10C.
But, Brits in the south east can welcome clear skies and sunshine on Saturday before more rain pushes down from the north west.
Temperatures are predicted to remain fresher across the weekend, with most of the UK not expected to reach above 14C.
