I didn’t think you could get pregnant when already expecting but I was so wrong – now I’m a mum of triplets
A WOMAN has revealed how she ended up getting pregnant when she was already expecting.
Dee is a mum of triplets, but explained in a video on her TikTok page that her babies came about through something called “superfetation pregnancy“.
“Basically, what happened was, we were planning for a baby and I got pregnant,” she said.
“I had an ultrasound – there was one baby.
“So I thought that I was pregnant and I figured I can’t get pregnant again, it’s fine if we continue to be careless.
“I literally said that!”
A week later, Dee went to the hospital because she was in so much pain, and feared she was having a miscarriage.
“But I came to find out I was in so much pain because my uterus was growing so fast, because there was two more babies!” she added.
“It happened all within like a week span!”
Dee concluded by saying that while a superfetation pregnancy is extremely rare, it’s also “very possible” – even for someone who doesn’t have triplets or twins running in their family, like her.
“I tell people all the time now to just be careful because if it happened to me, it could happen to anybody,” she said.
“Getting pregnant twice in one week.. I had TRIPLETS!” Dee captioned her video.
“I never knew that this was possible until it happened to me!”
She ended up having two identical and one fraternal triplets.
People were quick to comment on the video, with many admitting it was a “new fear unlocked”.
“Seriously I’m traumatised now!” Dee replied.
“I could’ve went on without knowing this,” another added.
“Yes this happened to my daughter she ended up with identical twins and a triplet,” someone else commented.
“They are 15 now.”
As another wrote: “For anyone currently pregnant and worried, just know this can only happen very early in a pregnancy!”
What is a superfetation pregnancy?
Superfetation is a rare phenomenon where a woman who is already pregnant falls pregnant for a second time.
It occurs when another egg is fertilised by sperm and implanted in the womb days, or sometimes even weeks, later than the first one.
While it’s common in animals such as badgers and hares, it’s extremely rare in humans.
“Superfetation results in fetuses with different ages and sizes,” the Healthline website writes.
“Despite this, it’s possible for both babies to be born fully developed and completely healthy.”
And Dee backed this up in her video, as she said that her pregnancy was good and all her babies were born healthy – and are still just as healthy now too.
“SAME!!! But in my twins!” someone else admitted.
“My baby boy is a week older than my baby girl.
“They were declared fraternal twins but in ultrasound baby boy is a week older.”
