Five house plants to deter mould even if you’re bad at gardening – and low maintenance ferns need to be top of your list
MOULD is every homeowner’s worst nightmare, and it’s no secret that getting rid of it is easier said than done.
As well as savvy cleaning tricks and nifty gadgets, did you know houseplants can help keep mould at bay?
According to gardening whizz Julia Czelazewicz, there are five plants you can buy to stop mould in it’s tracks – and you can nab most of them from your local garden centre for under a tenner too.
According to Gardening expert David Domoney, your bathroom and kitchen are the most likely spots to harbour mould.
He explained: “Houseplants in rooms prone to mould is a natural way of controlling humidity levels. This is due to the plants absorbing moisture through the leaves.
This is a win-win, because not only will you have reduced the risk of mould, but you’ll have stunning greenery to enjoy in your home.”
So, here are five of the best houseplants to get your hands on.
English Ivy
This plant is one of the easiest to get your hands on, and it’s a great cheap option too.
It grows best in a sunny spot with indirect light and regular watering, Julia noted on Instagram.
That said, this plant can be dangerous for dogs, so keep it out of reach if you have any furry friends.
Peace Lily
This pretty plant is perfect for humid spots in your home, since it’s great at absorbing mould spores.
Angela Slater, gardening expert at Hayes Garden World previously told Express.co.uk: “The peace lily plant is available as a large specimen.
“The larger the plant, the more effective it will be at removing the mould. Keep it just damp, you will know when it needs watering as the leaves will droop.”
Palm plants
Another great choice to help fight mould and control humidity, palm plants absorb excess moisture in the air through their leaves.
This makes them a great option for bathrooms, and there are plenty of types you can go for, as well as sizes.
Boston Fern
If you’re not known for your gardening skills, the low-maintenance Boston Fern might be for you.
“The Boston Fern thrives in moist climates and will naturally absorb the air moisture and balance out humidity levels in your home,” the experts from Country Gardener explained.
Pop it in a sunny spot in your home and keep it hydrated and it will do all the hard work for you.
Snake Plant
Julia noted in the video clip this this plant is another great low-maintenance option.
“They are hardy, adaptable, and can suck moisture from the air,” she explained.
