On Thursday morning, residents of Afghanistan’s western Herat province were abruptly shaken awake as yet another earthquake, measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale, struck, further amplifying their apprehensions and highlighting the ongoing seismic challenges faced by the region.

The U.S. Geological Survey data confirmed that the earthquake in western Afghanistan had a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale and struck at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The epicentre of this recent seismic event was pinpointed in the Qara Bagh area, situated approximately 30 kilometres away from Herat City, the provincial capital.

The tremors from the quake extended their reach to the Zindajan and Karokh districts within Herat province and even the Chahar Burjak districts in the neighbouring Nimroz province.

In the wake of a series of significant earthquakes over the past two weeks, many residents have no choice but to spend their nights outdoors, seeking refuge in tents and open areas as they prioritize their safety.

The recent earthquake in Afghanistan’s Herat province has left a devastating toll, claiming the lives of more than 2,000 people and causing injuries to several thousand others.

On the other hand, the earthquake in Herat has devastated the lives of 114,000 residents, prompting an urgent call for assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO). To address the immediate healthcare needs of the affected population, WHO is seeking $7.9 million in funding. This appeal is paramount, as it is crucial in providing vital services to those who have suffered the most.

Shockingly, over 90 per cent of the casualties and injuries resulting from the Herat earthquake are women, girls, children, and other vulnerable communities, underlining the urgency and significance of the support required.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has called for $93.6 million to support earthquake victims in Herat across different sectors. While the World Food Programme has requested $19 million for emergency aid to tens of thousands of survivors.

The earthquake in Herat has directly impacted over 43,000 people, with over 3,330 residential houses destroyed, highlighting the devastation the local population faces.
