‘The Amazing Race’s’ Jocelyn and Victor agree she should’ve done the Roadblock: ‘We would’ve had a different outcome’
After winning the first two legs of “The Amazing Race 35,” Jocelyn Chao and Victory Limary had one terrible, no good, very bad day in Vietnam — and it was a Mega Leg on top of that. They struggled to recover from dropping to the back of the pack in the first half of the leg and then luck was just not on their side in the final Roadblock, a needle-in-the-haystack task to match a tile on the Hùng King Temple grounds to their photo. It came down to Victor and Lena, who found hers first, making the couple the third team to be eliminated this season.
“Even at the end, after Lena left, I thought, ‘Maybe they’ll invoke this mercy rule,’ so I just called for a check anyway and he didn’t pass me. I called for it again just to make sure and he still didn’t pass. So I actually had to find the tile,” Victor tells Gold Derby (watch above). “When I finally found it, it was just, ‘Oh, my God!’ The details I had to fine for this tile — they were just so minute. I felt it was more than what was shown on TV.”

There was also a chance that he had passed and dismissed his tile already because it was covered by smut. “The actual tile itself had additional paint or dirt on it that maybe had masked it the first time around. So what I actually found were these two little dots in the upper lefthand corner. That was the only thing that clued me in that this was actually the right tile,” he says. “I think overall I did overthink it. There were multiple tiles that looked like that, but it wasn’t my tile. So I was trying to key in on the minute details that would say, ‘This is my tile.’ And I think I overthought that.”
Jocelyn was hopeful until the end, especially since Morgan and Lena had been there for way longer than they had. She was also encouraging her husband to just call for checks on the slim chance one of them might be right, but his fastidiousness prevailed. “What was really going through my head was, ‘Gosh, I should’ve done this challenge,’ Jocelyn states.
“We would’ve had a different outcome,” Victor agrees.
“Victor is very into those types of details and I sometimes am just like, ‘Oh, whatever. This is it.’ I probably would’ve checked 10 times,” she adds. “You know me. You saw the lotus challenge. I checked 12 times. ‘I’m good! Let’s go! Check! Check! Check!’”
