Gotham Awards will honor Bradley Cooper’s ‘Maestro’ with Cultural Icon and Creator Tribute
The Gotham Awards, which honor the year’s best independent films, have announced a cinematic achievement they intend to honor with a Cultural Icon and Creator Tribute: Bradley Cooper‘s “Maestro.” The tribute will take place during the live awards ceremony on Monday, November 27, 2023, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
As the Gotham Awards explain, the Cultural Icon and Creator Tribute was established “in order to recognize cultural icons and the filmmakers responsible for bringing that icon’s story to life.” So in this case the award is to celebrate both Cooper’s filmmaking achievement and the life and career of legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, whom he plays in the film.
Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of the Gotham Film and Media Institute, said in a statement, “With ‘Maestro,’ Bradley Cooper and the film’s entire creative team have vividly brought to life the story of an almost mythical figure in popular culture. Cooper has crafted a powerful story that highlights the ecstatic highs and anguished lows that come with a life pursuing love, family, and art. It is our privilege to honor Bernstein, Cooper, and this spectacular film.”
Though best known as an actor, Cooper has established himself as a multi-hyphenate talent. He has been nominated for four Oscars for acting: Best Actor for “Silver Linings Playbook,” “American Sniper” and “A Star is Born,” and Best Supporting Actor for “American Hustle.” Add to that one nomination for writing: Best Adapted Screenplay for “A Star is Born.” And round that out with four Best Picture nominations as a producer: “American Sniper,” “A Star is Born,” “Joker” and “Nightmare Alley.” At the Gotham Awards he was nominated for Best Ensemble Performance for his work with the cast of “Silver Linings Playbook.”
