Manchester United have received a major boost ahead of their upcoming local derby clash with Manchester City.
Manuel Akanji is set to miss the heavyweight clash next weekend after picking up two yellow cards against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
Akanji brought winger Kaoru Mitoma down to thwart a threatening counter-attacking opportunity that led to his first booking.
His second caution of the afternoon came in injury time for his unnecessary pull on Fati in Brighton’s half.
The second yellow was soft, but the former Borussia Dortmund player should have done better.
Man Utd face a big test against their local rivals
The Red Devils have endured a tough start to the season.
Several first-team players have been injured at some point in the campaign already, preventing Erik ten Hag from fielding his best starting XI.
They have already lost four of their nine Premier League games this season. By contrast, Man City are at the top of the table.
Pep Guardiola’s side have also had some setbacks. They lost twice before the recent international break but took all three points against high-flying Brighton yesterday.
The return of Rodri and John Stones has solidified City’s defence. Jeremy Doku is enjoying a fine start to his career in England and could cause big problems on the left flank against Diogo Dalot.
Man United have struggled to find the back of the net, but they must be at their best against City.
Rasmus Hojlund has shown glimpses of his talent and will be eager to bag his first Premier League goal against Man City.
Marcus Rashford has lacked urgency this season, which is a major concern for Ten Hag.
The Red Devils are the underdogs in this mega contest, but recent Manchester derbies have produced a few surprises.
