“The Eye” is a separated three-bedroom studio that also has a double garage.
Cheshil Cliff House came to the public’s attention when it appeared on an episode of the Channel 4 show Grand Designs in October 2019.
Many viewers dubbed the episode featuring the home as the “saddest ever” after its owner Edward Short, 52, revealed the arrival of the recession, building problems and the break-up of his marriage to his wife Hazel had left him on the verge of bankruptcy and he was desperate to find a buyer.
The dad-of-two, had spent a decade building the property on the North Devon coast and had ambitious plans to transform his family’s home.
The show’s presenter Kevin McCloud went back to visit the house last year for a special episode although many viewers branded it an “eyesore” and a “waste of money”.
Even the owner’s daughter said they were “over” the project.
Croyde residents have previously expressed their sympathy for Mr Short and his troubles.
One said: “It is so sad for Edward the sale has fallen through after everything he has had to deal with.
“No one knows the reason for the collapse but it is the talk of Croyde.
“The lighthouse has become so famous now we get people from all over the country driving down just to take a look at it along the coast road. It just seems jinxed.”
Mr Short’s fortunes though could be on the up, his property is back on the market and he is now engaged to Jalia Nambasca, 38, a nurse he met online.
