The Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada (SSAC) has just released a call for sessions for the next conference in Winnipeg as well as submissions for the Martin Eli Weil Prize.

The 49th Annual Conference of the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada will be held from May 22 to 25, 2024, and is inviting proposals for sessions surrounding the theme: Forms of Repair: Care, Restoration, and Redress in the Built Environment.

The SSAC 2024 conference will take place on Treaty One Territory, on the original lands of Anishinaabeg, Ininew, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. Winnipeg’s water is sourced from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.

“Issues of care and repair pervade architecture, landscape, heritage, and planning—from building and landscape maintenance, material and environmental decay, to concerns for the well-being of occupants,” reads the SSAC’s website. “Recent years have seen growing awareness and discussion of the externalities of design production, including the ecological and social effects of material sourcing and labour practices. At the same time, systemic inequalities in building and commemorative practices have become increasingly evident and critical.”

The 2024 SSAC conference is seeking to engage with notions of care, restoration, and redress, as they pertain to people, environments, buildings and materials, and public memory.

The SSAC is welcoming theoretical, pedagogical, and applied perspectives from design practitioners, historians, archivists, educators, and independent scholars working across all time periods. Sessions may explore topics such as repair work and maintenance, case studies of preservation and reuse, architecture and landscape’s relationship to labour and maintenance, considerations of obsolescence, impermanence, deconstruction, circularity, and the afterlife of buildings and more.

Those interested are encouraged to email their proposals to ssac.2024.seac@gmail.com by January 19, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. CST.

The Martin Eli Weil Prize will also be awarded at the SSAC Annual Conference, where the winner will be invited to present a lecture on their essay. This prize is awarded on an annual basis by the SSAC to a student who submitted an essay on the role played by the built environment in Canadian society. The winning essay will also be published in the Journal of the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada.
