Will ‘Succession’ sweep Golden Globes like ‘Angels in America’ did 20 years ago?

0

The team from HBO’s corporate drama “Succession” are going to be busy in January — for one week in particular. After being delayed by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, the Primetime Emmys will finally be handed out on January 6, 7 and 15. The Golden Globes are January 7. And the Critics Choice Awards are January 14. Since the series is expected to win most of its nominations in top categories, its cast and crew may want to draft a few different acceptance speeches to keep things fresh. But could it win everything? At the Globes, it’s a distinct possibility.

“Succession” broke the Golden Globes record for the most TV nominations ever in a single year (nine), and it stands a chance of winning all five of the categories it competes in. No TV program has done that since another dominant HBO production, “Angels in America.” Exactly 20 years ago it won Best TV Movie/Limited Series plus lead acting honors for Al Pacino and Meryl Streep and supporting trophies for Jeffrey Wright and Mary-Louise Parker. That was every category it was possible to win.

Could “Succession” match that success? It’s undoubtedly a high bar to clear, but we’re actually predicting it to come close. As of this writing we give it leading odds in four of its five categories based on the combined forecasts of Gold Derby users who have placed their bets here in our predictions center. It seems virtually unbeatable for Best Drama Series: it’s the unanimous choice of Expert journalists, Gold Derby Editors, our Top 24 Users and our All-Star Top 24. And though not a lock, Sarah Snook is the heavy favorite for Best TV Drama Actress; she needs to watch out for Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”) and Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”), though, since the Globes have a history of awarding brand new shows.

Best TV Drama Actor is a bigger challenge. “Succession’s” Kieran Culkin is the favorite, but our Editors actually favor Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”). Pascal has the new-series advantage, assuming the current Golden Globe Association likes shiny, buzzy new things as much as the former Hollywood Foreign Press Association did. What’s more, Pascal might be helped by “Succession” having three nominees in this category (Culkin, Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox); if they split votes, Pascal could slide between them into the winner’s circle.

Best TV Supporting Actor front-runner Matthew Macfadyen faces a similar challenge up against his “Succession” co-stars Alan Ruck and Alexander Skarsgard. Our odds indicate that if they do cancel each other out, it’ll be James Marsden (“Jury Duty”) who benefits. Last is Best TV Supporting Actress, which is the category “Succession” is least likely to win: J. Smith-Cameron ranks fifth in our odds, which instead favor the aforementioned Meryl Streep to win for joining the cast of “Only Murders in the Building” this season. Streep holds the record for the most Globe wins for acting (eight), so if Smith-Cameron does manage to beat the odds, it’ll be hard to imagine “Succession” losing anything throughout the night.

It’s an interesting twist of fate that Streep was part of the last Globes clean sweep, but now “Succession” will have to beat Streep to achieve another.
