The number of Americans filing new unemployment benefits claims fell more than expected last week, indicating tight labor market conditions. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 18,000 to a seasonally adjusted 202,000 for the week ended December 30. The labor market is cooling following 525 basis points worth of interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve since March 2022.
