The year of Taylor Swift may not be over with the ringing in of the new year. Right now it looks like it’ll continue well into 2024, not only at the Grammys, where she’s a six-time nominee, but at the Golden Globes, where she could win her first trophy on her fifth career nomination. She could win the brand new category for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement for her record-breaking “Eras Tour” movie.
Swift was previously nominated for four Golden Globes, all for Best Original Song: “Safe and Sound” from “The Hunger Games” (2012), “Sweeter Than Fiction” from “One Chance” (2013), “Beautiful Ghosts” from “Cats” (2019) and “Carolina” from “Where the Crawdads Sing” (2022). She didn’t win any of those, but it’s a testament to how especially well liked she has been by these awards since none of those Globe noms translated to Oscar noms.
As of this writing “Barbie” is the front-runner to win the inaugural Cinematic and Box Office Achievement prize, according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, and for good reason. It grossed over $600 million at the domestic box office and more than $1.4 billion worldwide, and it’s nominated for nine Globes including Best Film Comedy/Musical. So it’s the highest grossing film in the lineup and seemingly the best regarded by the Golden Globe Association, which should make it the clear winner, right?
Not necessarily. “The Eras Tour” ranks second in our odds with three Expert journalists, two Gold Derby Editors, three of our Top 24 Users and one of our All-Star Top 24 predicting it to win. It all depends on how voters choose to interpret this category, which is brand new so there are no historic trends to guide us. Yes, “Barbie” made the most money, but “The Eras Tour” was a historic achievement in its own right, raking in $179 million at the domestic box office and thus becoming the highest grossing concert film of all time.
Does that constitute the best cinematic and box office achievement? Perhaps. “Eras” might also benefit from “Barbie’s” huge windfall in the nominations. After all, Globe voters have six other categories where they can support Greta Gerwig‘s film. It might be tempting to honor “Barbie” as the best comedy film of the year while honoring Swift here. After the year she’s had, who wouldn’t want to put her up on their stage? It seems like everything she touches turns to gold.
