And that mess is on you AG
Props always when due. Props to Zimi for playing his heart out. Props to Bennett playing 37 minutes because Elvis got hurt. Always, props to Holmes for being Holmes.
But AG almost blew that game for us. Totally out-coached.
Here's what happened from my view:
1. We kept putting Holmes at the high post of the zone
2. They collapsed from Bennett to take away the dribble, knowing Bennett didn't want to shoot
3. Zimi and Cheeks kept ending up in the post
4. Run multiple guys at Brea
Holmes never looked at the rim from 15', he just kept driving into the teeth of the defense and had no one in the post to dump it to. Bennett was his outlet pass, not a threat. And Brea was face-guarded with his defender under zero pressure.
Here's the adjustment, from my view:
1. Move Holmes to the short corner (he was never there the whole game)
2. Move Cheeks / Santos to the strong side corner
3. Bennett goes opposite, reverse the ball to Santos / Cheeks
4. Flash Brea to the FT line - his second favorite shot
5. Holmes duck-in as soon as Brea gets the ball
At this point either Brea shoots and scores about 40 points taking target practice, or he dumps it to Holmes who is now 1-on-1 within 5 feet which is what we really want to happen. UMass would have to adjust and drop people to help, leaving the corner 3 open. Miss or make, it's a good shot.
UMass made the adjustments to our 1-3-1, we didn't adjust the whole game. The announcers at one point said UD was "on pace for 100" and it wasn't after the first 2:00. We had 30 points after 12 minutes and barely scored 30 more the rest of the game after UMass went to the 1-3-1.
