Experts slugfest: How do these Golden Globe wins (and losses) change the Oscar race?

0

“Barbie” was the biggest film of 2023, but it was its Barbenheimer other half, “Oppenheimer,” that was the biggest film of Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to break down all the winners and what they mean for the Oscars.

“Oppenheimer” solidified its status as the Oscar frontrunner with five wins, making it the most awarded film at the Globes since “La La Land” (2016) went seven for seven. It won all four categories in which it was favored, Best Drama Film, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. and Best Original Score for Ludwig Goransson. Its fifth victory came in Best Drama Actor, where Cillian Murphy took down odds-on favorite Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”). Murphy has been the Best Actor Oscar favorite since “Oppenheimer” opened, but now is there any chance of Cooper dethroning him from the top spot? We discuss how all four acting categories could see sweepers.

Despite coming into the show with a leading nine nominations, “Barbie” walked away with just two, Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For?” for songwriters Billie Eilish and Finneas and the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category. It lost Best Comedy/Musical Film to “Poor Things,” which also claimed Best Comedy/Musical Actress for Emma Stone. Is this a sign of things to come for “Barbie”: scoring a lot of nominations but underperforming in wins?

On the TV side, “Succession,” The Bear” and “Beef” dominated as expected, all taking their respective series prizes. All three series also bagged his-and-her lead trophies for their stars. “Succession” ruled all with four wins as it also added the supporting actor prize for Matthew Macfadyen. Is this a preview of what’s to come at next week’s Emmys (which were already voted on in August)?
