Six savvy ways to save cash on your weekly food shop at the supermarket
THE soaring cost of food has made feeding your family all the more expensive.
But with a few nifty tricks you can cut a few bob off your weekly food shop.
Here’s how to save money at the supermarket . . .
REACH BACK: Stores tend to display fresh produce in order of its expiry dates. Items with earlier dates are at the fronts of shelves.
Reach to the backs to get fresher items such as meat and fish. This will give you more time at home to eat the food and should reduce waste.
GET LOOSE: Opt for fruit and veg loose and unpackaged where possible, including bananas, carrots and potatoes.
Not only is it more environ-mentally friendly but you’ll usually pay less for the same quantity simply by losing the wrapping.
SWITCH AISLE: If you’re buying spices, grains and tinned products such as tomatoes or coconut milk, head to the world-food aisle where you’ll often get more bang for your buck.
It will often feature items that are cheaper than you will pay for similar goods elsewhere in the store. Most supermarkets have this aisle, except Aldi and Lidl.
YELLOW STICKERS: Don’t forget to check out the food that’s reduced to clear each day, for great bargains. Pick up anything that you can cook up and freeze or eat.
WONKY VEG: Many supermarkets now put slightly misshapen fruit and veg on sale at discounted prices. It means you can make unexpected savings on some of the items on your shopping list.
But always consider carefully whether you’ll be likely to use the produce — so that you don’t end up wasting cash.
