Britain’s most famous ballet school ditches daily weigh-ins amid fears it could be seen as fattist
BRITAIN’S most famous ballet school has ditched daily weigh-ins over fears it would be seen as fattist.
The Royal Ballet School has been praised for the move — leading other prestigious dance establishments to give it a spin.
A source said: “Despite its genteel reputation, ballet is one of the most demanding disciplines in the world.
“Dancers are told they cannot be over a certain weight, or look a certain way, and had to be weighed-in every morning before training.
“With the body positivity movement in full swing, and mental health such a hot topic, the Royal Ballet School has now stopped this.
“It’s a brilliant step. Everyone is incredibly supportive.”
In 2011 Oscar-winning film Black Swan dancers were shown being weighed.
The toll the discipline took on them was also revealed, with the dancers getting injured from over-training.
As one critic said: “The effect depicts ballet as an art form that requires something like self-torture and mutilation in order to perform it.”
A spokesperson for the school confirmed weigh-ins were no longer conducted.
