State police charged a man with DUI early Friday after he was spotted driving the wrong way on Route 2A and Interstate 395.

Troopers just before 1 a.m. received multiple reports of a wrong-way driver on the eastbound side of Route 2A in Montville, according to Connecticut State Police. As troopers were responding to the area they received additional reports indicating that the motorist was now driving the wrong way on I-395 South in the area of Exit 11, state police said.

Troopers were able to pull the motorist over in the area of Exit 14 in Norwich. He was identified as 62-year-old Robert Sylvester of Milford, according to state police.

Sylvester failed multiple field sobriety tests before he was taken into custody and transported to Troop E in Montville, where he was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to drive in the proper lane and driving the wrong way on a divided highway.

Sylvester was released on a $10,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 23 in Norwich Superior Court.

“We thank the members of the public who called 911 to report this incident,” state police said in a statement Friday. “As always, we ask that anyone who observes a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction please keep a safe distance away and call 911 as soon as possible, as this is a true emergency.”
