Two dead following one-vehicle crash in Richmond

RICHMOND — Two people died early Friday when a speeding car ran off the road and crashed into a center median, police said.

The crash happened about 7:15 a.m. in the area of Carlson Boulevard and Florida Avenue, Richmond police spokesperson Sgt. Donald Patchin said. Police remained at the crash scene past 10 a.m.

The two people in the car were dead when officers arrived. Their names were not released pending confirmation of their identities and notification of next of kin.

Patchin said the early investigation showed that the vehicle was speeding north when the driver lost control and veered toward the median. The vehicle hit the median and then appeared to hit at least one tree and perhaps a pole, Patchin said.

Police will use toxicology tests obtained from an autopsy to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved. Patchin said there were no obvious signs of such usage at the crash scene.

Carlson Boulevard remained closed from Cutting Avenue to north of Florida Avenue, according to police. Police were expected to be on the scene past noon.
