A few years ago, when short and/or weekend trips started to become a thing in my adult life (looking at you, bachelorette parties), I realized I had a gaping hole in my luggage arsenal: a mid-size bag that’s comfortable to carry, durable, and at least a bit stylish. I didn’t have a one that was truly up to the task. My weekender was too small and flimsy. My roller carry-on suitcase was a pain to schlep anywhere — especially through the New York subway system. I started researching duffles, but many felt too traditional or basic.

I wish I could take credit for finding the bag that solved my problem, but it was actually my younger brother who did. Five years ago, he gave me a Go-Bag from the adventure brand Baboon to the Moon for Christmas. Immediately upon opening it, I was impressed. Its construction felt sturdy, it had multiple options for carrying (including backpack straps), and it actually looked, well, cool.

I put it to the test immediately and have never looked back. Over the years, I’ve brought it on long-haul trips to places like Greece and Nepal as a second piece of luggage (its external zip passport pocket is convenient for international travel); I’ve also lugged it across New York to catch trains to visit my family upstate (those backpack straps are incredibly comfortable); and thrown it in the back of a packed car for road trips with friends (it’s very durable).

I own the 40-liter (small) version in black, and for me, it can carry enough for 3-4 days of travel. (The brand also offers 32-liter and 60-liter sizes in a bunch of colorways, including neutrals and limited-edition brighter hues.) One thing to note is that, like most duffels, it doesn’t have much in the way of internal storage compartments, but there is a mesh zippered pocket on the inside of its lid, which is convenient for smaller items. Unlike other duffels, though, it feels very structured — it holds its form even when empty, and its weather-proof PVC exterior protects what’s inside. Even now, after countless trips, it barely shows any wear.

Since I acquired it, my Go-Bag has usurped all others as the luggage I reach for on every trip. It’s dependable, easy to carry, and still looks good as new. Will this be the year I expand my Go-Bag collection? I’d give it pretty good odds.
