‘Retired out means your innings is over’: Aakash Chopra criticizes the umpire for letting Rohit Sharma bat again in the Super Over

Several dramatic events occurred during the third and final T20 International match between India and Afghanistan, which was played on January 17 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Two Super Overs were played in order to determine the result of the match. Ultimately, India prevailed, winning the second Super Over by a margin of 10 runs.

After being retired out of the first Super Over, Rohit Sharma batted in the second, drawing criticism from both the umpires and the Indian captain. Aakash Chopra, a former cricket player from India, offered his perspective on the aforementioned situation during his panel analysis. He said that the opening batsman shouldn’t be permitted to bat.

“Rohit Sharma was retired out. Retired hurt means there should be an external injury on the field of play and there the umpires allow you to bat again. Retired out means your innings is over, you cannot come back again. So as soon as he went out, I said on commentary that he cannot come to bat. It’s done because he had lost his wicket. Rinku Singh and Rohit Sharma came back and I thought it was wrong. Rohit Sharma shouldn’t have been allowed to bat according to the rules,” Chopra was heard saying on his YouTube channel.

Aakash Chopra went on to discuss India’s choice, following Rinku Singh’s out, to insert Sanju Samson as the third batter in the second Super Over. Given his ability to handle left-arm pace and the fact that Afghanistan’s bowler, Fareed Ahmad, was a left-arm bowler, the former cricket player claimed that Shivam Dube would have been sent out rather than the wicketkeeper-batter.

“Sanju Samson came when Rinku got out and I was shocked. Nothing against Sanju but he had already been dismissed for a first-ball duck. He didn’t get a chance to bat much as he got out off the first ball. Shivam Dube was sitting out and you didn’t send him. Fareed Ahmad was bowling. Dube hits left-arm pace as well. I was surprised. We scored 11 runs only. In fact, we didn’t even play the entire six balls, we were bowled out on the fifth delivery itself,” he further said.
