“You Can’t Keep…”: Rohit Sharma’s blunt opinion on T20 World Cup Squad Selection 

After two consecutive ducks in the T20I series against Afghanistan, India skipper Rohit Sharma bounced back, hitting an undefeated century in the third T20I. In addition to Rohit, Rinku Singh also performed admirably, combining with the captain for an undefeated partnership of 190 runs to propel the side from 22/4 to 212/4. Following the match, Rohit was questioned about the T20 World Cup lineups and his and head coach Rahul Dravid’s attitudes towards it. In answer, Rohit was rather direct, stating that he is aware that no one can be happy all the time.

After the game, Rohit spoke with the presenter and said that the team management is still considering eight to ten guys, thus the final 15-man roster has not yet been decided.

“We have not finalised the 15-member squad but there are 8-10 players in our minds. So we will make our combinations according to the conditions. In the West Indies, the conditions are slow, so we’ll have to pick our team accordingly. As far as Rahul Dravid and I are concerned, we’ve tried to maintain clarity. We try to tell them why they’ve been selected or not been selected even after putting in performances,” said Rohit.

In the third T20 International, Rohit even predicted that the players on the bench would question why they weren’t playing. However, he acknowledged that only 11 players could play, thus he could never satisfy everyone.

“You can’t keep everyone happy, that is what I’ve learned in my time as captain. You can keep 15 players happy. Then also, only 11 are happy. The four players sitting on the bench also ask why they’re not playing. I’ve learned that you can’t keep everyone happy, and the focus should be on the team’s goal,” Rohit explained.

Team India’s final challenge before this year’s T20 World Cup was in Afghanistan. The players’ Indian Premier League performances will now determine which players are chosen.
