From Eames chairs to classic cars, if you want the original of something, it’ll typically cost a pretty penny. That’s not the case with the original blue jean. Invented in 1873, the 501 is the first pair of jeans, and it’s scarcely changed over the past 150 years. The Levi’s 501 still has a versatile high-waisted and straight-leg fit, riveted pressure points, and, of course, a button fly. Crucially, even though it’s an iconic item of clothing, the Levi’s 501 is still priced like workwear, not fashion.
Although it’s already affordable, finding the 501 on sale is even better. Right now, Amazon has Levi’s light stonewash 501s for $49, over $30 off the list price of $80. The jeans have over 68,000 five-star ratings, and over the past 100+ years have been worn by they likes of James Dean, Bruce Springsteen, and Barack Obama.
Levi's Men's 501 Original Fit Jeans, From $49 (was $80) at Amazon
These jeans are not what Levi’s calls “Shrink-To-Fit,” which literally shrink in the wash in order to be the correct fit for you, so you can simply order your normal size and they’ll be ready to wear right away. They are made from 100% cotton, so they might feel stiff and tight at first. But even without elastane or spandex, all-cotton jeans stretch out and become more comfortable over time.
Wider, looser fits are trending at the moment, but you don’t need to go full Balenciaga baggy to try out a more relaxed cut. The Levi’s 501 is the perfect pair of jeans to try out a straight fit for anyone used to slim jeans like the 511. When cuffed, the 501 has a flattering, slightly tapered look. The light stonewash has a slightly ‘80s look to it, though Amazon has plenty of other colors in stock (not all of which are discounted).
Shoppers were impressed with the fit of these jeans, with one writing “These fit and feel great. They're my go-to jeans for everyday wear.” Another called them “an all-time classic,” noting that “I have paid $350 for jeans in the past … but Levi's never disappoints.”
Shoppers also appreciated the quality, with one writing that they were “nice-looking and durable,” and another writing that “The quality of the construction is also impressive, with sturdy denim, reinforced seams, and durable hardware.”
The Levi’s 501 has been around for 150 years, and it’s not going anywhere soon, but it’s still worth picking up this iconic style at a discounted price.
